Potassium nitrate is a chemical compound with the chemical formula KNO₃. It is an ionic salt of potassium ions K+ and nitrate ions NO₃ and is therefore an alkali metal nitrate. It occurs in nature as the mineral ‘nitre’. It is a source of nitrogen from which it derives its name. Potassium nitrate is one of several nitrogen-containing compounds collectively and historically referred to as saltpeter and is a key ingredient in gunpowder.

Major uses of potassium nitrate are in fertilizers, tree stump removal, rocket propellants and fireworks.  In processed meats, potassium nitrate reacts with haemoglobin and generates a pink colour. Potassium Nitrate (KNO₃) is obtained through a reaction of NaNO₃ and Potassium Chloride (KCl), or as a co-product of metal catalysts. It is an important input in the production of crystal enamel for covering ceramic or metallic surfaces and metal treatments.

Compound NPKs and NPK blends are types of multi-nutrient fertilizers containing some percentage of all three of the major nutrients, nitrogen (N), phosphorous (P) and potassium (K). These products are intended to allow for complete fertilization of a crop with a single application.
